Blue Angel is a performance work woven from real life seafarer stories and combined with an original Saxon poem, found in “The Exeter Book” called ‘The Seafarer’.

Human history was built on seafaring and yet we still turn a blind-eye to the sea. Today there are 1.2 million seafarers working worldwide. Every night there is a city of workers afloat on our oceans, delivering our consumer goods along a liquid highway to our doors. They are the most exploited workers on the planet and without them our Harvey Norman stores would be empty. Yet they are almost invisible to us, their dramatic stories almost unknown. Blue Angel tells these stories. Love, danger, loneliness, sex, separation and contemporary slavery combine with an ancient poem revealing some things change, but fundamentally the human journey stays the same.

Blue Angel is also a significant international work. It is being created in partnership with three port cities around the globe, in multiple languages, with the material created in each location combining to create the work. Blue Angel brings these international stories under one narrative flag to show the similarities of these stories wherever the liquid highway take us.
